What Does Home Content Insurance Cover?

Home content insurance covers almost everything that you own inside your house. This usually includes possessions such as furniture, televisions, laptops, computers, clothing, general household goods and even food and drink. Depending on what type of policy you purchase, valuables may also be covered. Most insurance companies only offer coverage for valuables worth up to a certain amount, so if you are unsure of whether a certain item is insured, contact your insurance provider and ask them. You will find that different policies cover items up to different values, so it’s best to make sure that you have the right policy, especially if you own valuable goods.

Home content insurance policies will provide cover for the items if they get damaged whilst they are inside your house. There are many different things that could occur within your home and damage certain items. Most home content insurance policies will cover against any theft, flooding and earthquakes. They will also cover any damage caused to your belongings through serious water leaks, explosions and other such problems.

Liability insurance is included in many home content insurance policies. Basically, this means that if anybody was to hurt themselves inside your home and decided to make a claim against you, the insurance policy would cover that. This is often one of the reasons that people decide to take out an insurance policy for the contents of their home, as claims made against you by another person can amount to very large sums of money.

If you have young children or you are concerned about damaging things yourself, make sure you get a policy that covers accidental damage caused by the people within the home. If you have lots of electrical equipment, find out if your policy covers damaging your gadgets accidentally. You can usually extend your policy so that it covers accidental damage to either all of your items or just particular ones. You must bear in mind that once you take items out of your home, the cover will not be active and so any items outside the house will not be protected.
